I know it’s really boring to moan about the weather but, it has been SERIOUSLY miserable this week. Torrential rain every day since Saturday – just what we all want for the first full week of the summer holidays! The jolly deckchairs have been shut indoors, and it’s been so chilly that not even a cup of tea has been drunk in the garden.
On Sunday I decided to escape the rain for a bit and catch the train to Peterborough.
It’s half an hour on the train, and the station is right next to the shopping centre – perfect for a rainy day when you don’t want to walk too far. Re-visiting Queensgate shopping centre is always a blast from the past – scene of so many teenage shopping trips! I met up with my mum and we had a nice little potter round the shops. There’s even a Tiger shop now, which was a pleasure to browse compared to the Cambridge one which is always completely rammed!
I bought some extremely pink new trainers…
Hopefully, they’re going to inspire me to run more often. That’s the idea, anyway.
I also checked out the sewing machines in John Lewis. I thought this one looked good, has anyone used one?
On Monday the rain stopped for a couple of hours so we raced into town to run a few errands. I had a lovely impromptu lunch with the boys at the Almonry tea room.
We sat outside and they ran around the gardens while the storm clouds gathered overhead. We made it back home just in time!
Later that afternoon, we also had fun making our Very Hungry Caterpillar smoothies!
On Tuesday, the boys had a morning of multi-sports at school. They were a bit reluctant to go back so soon into the holidays, but actually they had a great time and I rather wish I’d booked a few more sessions. I ran home after dropping them off – which was hard work and my beetroot face really set off the new pink trainers nicely. I was hoping for a bit of a catch-up on the blog, but was hampered by the first of several day’s worth of broadband problems from BT. Really frustrating.
After picking up the boys, we drove over to my parents. Wet again, of course, so they enjoyed a Lego-fest with granddad. I found some of my old books for Gabriel to enjoy reading this holiday. I loved The Worst Witch so much. He really enjoyed it too and it’s a whole lot less scary than Harry Potter (which he loves, but sometimes regrets when it comes to lights out). Pretty similar though in many ways!
On Wednesday, James arrived back from Germany bearing yet more chocolate. I was pretty taken with these though…
Thursday was mainly spent working outside on an exciting project. The weather has not been playing along though and I’ve been shower (well, more like monsoon) dodging. I’ve managed to choose the worst week possible for outdoor painting!
The revolting weather has at least given me the opportunity to wear my new sale purchase – this Zara parka which I spotted on Caro’s blog...
Which was a bargain at £29.99. I’m keeping it, but I have a nagging doubt that it makes me look a bit like the Soup Dragon.
My word of the week is, predictably, RAIN. Did it rain on St Swithin’s Day this year? I fear it may have done.
I’ll leave you with this updated version of the old St Swithin’s Day rhyme which I found on the Royal Meteorological Society’s website:
St Swithun’s day if thou dost rain
For forty days, relatively unsettled there’s a fair chance it will remain
St Swithun’s day if thou be fair
For forty days, a northerly jet stream might result in some fairly decent spells
But then again it might not
English summers – if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry!

It did rain on St Swithins day, sadly. We’re doomed!
I saw that parka on Caro’s blog too and have been seriously tempted by it.
Hope you have a great weekend, and that the sun shines! Xxx

Oh boy, you really have had the worse of the weather, Here in Oxfordshire we’ve had a few showers but nothing like your rain! I’m loving the new rain coat and at least you’re going to get a lot of wear out of it, esp as it rained on St Swithern’s day , lol!

Ha ha, the soup dragon! I’m sure you look lovely in it. We’ve been down near London for the past few days and have managed to dodge any rain there, which has been lovely as I was sick of it, too. I’m longing for those hot days we had a few weeks ago to come back again, so am with you on moaning about the weather. Thanks for sharing with #WotW x
marmaladepie says
Thanks Jocelyn – we’ve had two days of sunshine in a row now – hurrah!

That raincoat is lush! The rain is keeping us inside the house too and we try to go out on those times when it would stop and there would be a wee bit sunshine!

I’m very excited to see what your mystery project turns out to be and hey, at least like you say it’s an excuse to break out the new coat which I think is fabulous. Gotta love British summer time! X

The sewing machine looks lovely! And it’s a Singer (I have a Singer. I know a lot of sew-ers love their Janomes too but I’m nostalgic about the Singers and love mine). PS I wish I could write sew-er as sewer but there’s always that unfortunate other pronunciation!)
marmaladepie says
I really like the look of this one. My mum has a Singer which she got for her 21st birthday which is still going strong today! I just need to do some research now and save up some money! I can’t wait to get started xx
