It’s a week and half till the school summer holidays. Can you believe it? Everything at school is gearing up for the end of term and there’s been lots on.
The week got off to a bad start when I cut my finger open on our new bread knife. James and I have a poor track record with sharp knives (he chopped off the end of his finger the Christmas before last!). Mine isn’t as bad as that though, thank goodness, but it’s annoying and I feel a fool.
On Tuesday Tom had his nursery celebration performance. It was very musical and they were all dressed up as different animals and insects. Here is my little stag beetle.
As usual Tom got very into it all, and made lots and lots of noise. He seemed to have the biggest and noisiest instrument of all! I can’t believe how quickly his final year at nursery has flown by. Reception will be a big transition in September, but it will be made easier by the fact that he’s been at the school’s nursery for eighteenth months. He already feels part of the school and is familiar with lots of things.
On Wednesday it was move-up day – Tom had a morning in his reception class, and Gabriel spent the day in Year 2. The day was a positive one for both of them, which was a relief!
With all the business at school, housework has been rather neglected this week. The house is terribly untidy, although I have started to take it in hand now as I can’t bear the idea of a slummy house for my birthday weekend!
Blog-life has also been a little neglected this week. I feel a little uninspired – the cogs of everyday life have been turning away, but ideas are not flowing.
Even if the house and blog are being neglected, the garden is blooming. My sweet peas just keep on coming and my blue Delphinium are at their peak. Every year I marvel at that fantastic, vivid blue.
We also finally bought a new parasol! It took us a while to find one – buying a parasol in summer is surprisingly difficult. Who’d have thought it? The garden furniture has been brushed down and we’re summer ready!
This week is also the week that we started watching the second half of the final season of Mad Men. I can hardly bear to watch it. What will I do when it’s all over? We’ve been watching it on and off since before the boys were born and I’ll certainly miss it. Maybe they can make a spin-off? I’ll just have to start again at the beginning I suppose.
Oh, and one last thing – Tom finally got to bring home the nursery travelling teddy! We still have fond memories of Gabriel doing this a couple of years ago.
So, how was your week? Have you got end-of-term madness as well? I’m looking forward to breathing a big sigh of relief on the last day.
This week my word of the week has to be school – most of my time this week has either been spent there, or repeatedly walking there! As usual I am linking up with Jocelyn’s Word of the Week, over at The Reading Residence.

Loved Tom’s costume and the travelling teddy, which was much smaller than I had imagined XXXXXX

Hi Lizzie, just wanted to say hello. Discovered your blog a while ago and follow it via Bloglovin. Have two boys of my own (well, they’re now 21 and 24 but still my boys!) so reading about your two brings memories back. I lived in Norwich and north Suffolk for a number of years when I was younger so many happy memories of East Anglia and visits to lovely Ely. Also my elder son was at Cambridge for 3 years so more happy memories – enjoyed your post last week. Sending best wishes, Karen x

Hi Karen, thanks so much for your lovely comment! I’m so glad you are enjoying my blog. One of the things I love most about writing it is getting to know lots of new people! x

What an adorable stag beetle! It is so busy at this time of year at school, my girl seems to have new things happening every day now, I keep having to double check the calendar to ensure I’m not missing anything! Thanks for sharing with #WotW x

Thanks Jocelyn! There has been a lot of frantic calendar checking in our house too!

Your poor finger! Ouch!
Ah, Mad Men – what will we do without Don Draper and Roger Sterling in our lives?
Hope you have a lovely weekend! Xxx

Oh goodness, it feels like there’s something school-ish to do every day at the moment doesn’t it? And then every now and then the nagging reminder flips into your mind of teacher presents! I just need a weekend to get organised! (Yes I know the weekend starts today but my mother-in-law’s here which means I need another one!)

This week is slightly less busy for us fortunately! I am feeling a bit smug this year as I’ve been collecting little gifts and putting them away – there’s bound to someone I’ve forgot though, there always is! x

Gorgeous photography as always, apart from the one with your finger – oouch!!
Everything seems to be geared around school at the moment and it’s hectic as they head towards the end of the year. Still, it’s heading towards the summer holidays which are probably going to be just as busy!!

Thanks Tracey! I am currently thinking about some good activities for the summer – I like things to be relaxed, but not TOO relaxed! x

We are also on the end of the school week this coming week and my son will meet his new teacher on Monday so we are excited for that. Only my son is sick today so hopefully he will be better enough to meet her tomorrow.
Looks like you had a lovely week except for the cut. I am not good with knives as well and well oven too!
