There’s no denying it, summer has well and truly arrived! We’ve been sweltering in a typical June heat wave all this week.
On Saturday we finally put the new fence up! It was a very hot day, but James managed to get nearly all of it done, with just a little bit of help from me and the boys. It’s looking much smarter now and I finally managed to start tidying up the patio and arranging the pots.
Sunday was a very wet day – which offered us all a brief respite from the heat. We spent the day pottering around and I made a lovely shell string mobile.
James made some more of his delicious sourdough, which we enjoyed for lunch.
On Monday it was school sports day for both boys. It was another boiling day, which made a change from last year when the playing field was flooded! Both boys did very well – although they’re not too fussed by it all.
On Wednesday I went along to help on the Year 1 trip to the Botanic Gardens in Cambridge. 120 children, 3 coaches and the hottest day of the year – what a combination! It was truly sweltering, at least 36 degrees in the shade – even worse in the greenhouses… It was a bit too hot for the children to take much in, but I would love to go back again with both boys on a cooler day.
In spite of the heat, our garden is blooming and I’ve picked up a few lovely plants this week from local stalls and the weekly market.
Things are finally looking up now the demotivating, decrepit fence has been banished! Next week I want to start prettifying things with a new parasol, cushions and bunting. This was also the week my sweet peas flowered!
Indoors we’ve been finding some prettiness in beautiful flowers….
And bite-sized cakes….
Thunder is forecast for tonight – a good storm would be great to clear the air. How was your week? Has the heat wave reached you? My word for the week definitely has to be hot!

Hi Angela – fortunately my boys and their daddy ate all of the cakes so I didn’t have time to get tempted! The sourdough really is as good as it looks π

Sounds as if you’ve had a more productive week than me despite the heat – and boy has it been hot, thankfully it’s back down to more manageable levels of humidity today. Love the look of those cakes, save me one and I’ll be over for a cup of tea π #wotw

Much less humid here today too – it’s been very hot in the sun, but it’s cooled down nicely this evening. Have a great weekend! π

Oh, it’s definitely been hot here! Such a shame the school trip fell on such a sweltering day for you, difficult to enjoy then – hope yo get back there with the boys when it cools down. Loving your flower pics π Thanks for sharing with #WotW

Thanks Jocelyn! I can’t wait to take them – its very close to the railway station, so it’s very convenient for us. Plus, next time I’ll be able to treat my son to an ice cream – which was forbidden on this trip!

Every year my neighbour and I spend most of the summertime up here complaining that it’s not much like summer and have you seen how lovely it is down south? Then a heatwave hits and suddenly we’re both saying “I bet you’re glad you don’t live in London anymore”!
In other news, your flowers are heavenly. My house is full of wild flowers as my garden’s not yielding much at the moment. I can’t wait for the freesias to come out.

Thanks Katie! Yes, I know, I’ve spent weeks moaning about the weather being too cold so I feel I can’t complain too much! I don’t mind the heat too much unless I have to do anything in it – like school runs or trips! I’d be ok if I could just sit watching Wimbledon…

WOW look at that sour dough! Gosh, and the buns too – will you adopt me please?! It’s been SO hot hasn’t it? We’ve been splashing in pools and out and about so much, that we are all so tired each night! Jess xx

It’s amazing, isn’t it? It tastes as good as it looks too! I think it deserves a whole post to itself! π

Hi Lizzie, that sourdough looks to die for. I love making bread from scratch (no bread maker) but have never made sourdough! It’s going to have to happen one day.
The flowers look lovely too, must be enjoying the bit of warmth….Saying that though flowers don’t thrive well here in the heat, so I tend to stick with cactus. Hope a storm clears the air and you continue to enjoy nice summer temperatures.

Thanks Debbie! We did indeed have a big storm on Friday night which cooled everything down a lot – it’s a lot more pleasant now π

Shame your school trip coincided with such heat, but at least you can take the boys in the hols and you all can enjoy it again!
Nice to meet you xx
