A good hat has the potential to make or break your day. Ear warmer, hair saviour, style statement – however you wear it, it’s an autumn essential. Here are my favourites...
RAIN HAT
Will it ever stop raining? I’m not sure. But I do know that this wet, dreich weather is the perfect excuse to wear a rain hat. Better than a drippy hood any day. I particularly like this one by Zara and this one by Mango.
THE CLASSIC BEANIE
You don’t want to ever be without one of these. It protects your hair from frizz in the rain and keeps your ears warm. Keep one in your bag at all times. Mine is from H&M, but not online alas. This one by Mango is lovely.
THE BERET
This style classic performs the same practical function as the beanie, but with a little je ne sais quois. Perfect for those days when you want to look a little smarter, or a touch more Parisian. These ones by Mango are particularly lovely.
LEOPARD PRINT PILL-BOX HAT
Every wardrobe needs a bit of leopard print and a touch of frivolity. Technically, I think this hat from Oliver Bonas is a beret – but as soon as I saw it I started singing Bob Dylan’s ode to the leopard print pill-box hat.
I’ll let Bob do the talking on this one:
Well you, look so pretty in it
Honey, can I jump on it sometime?
Yes, I just wanna see
If it’s really that expensive kind
You know it balances on your head just like a
Mattress balances on a bottle of wine
Your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat
