When I was a child advent calendars were a simple affair. A paper one, or if you were really lucky, a basic chocolate one with those moulded plastic windows. I still remember the childhood joy of digging out that piece of cheap chocolate every morning in December. It always helped to pass the dark days of December before the Christmas holidays.
These days advent calendars are a much bigger deal, and they’re prettier and more exciting than ever. You may wonder why I’m talking about them in November? It’s because some of the nicer ones sell out very early. And they’re not just for children any more either.
Here’s a selection of my favourites: from traditional windows to toy-filled extravaganzas…plus, some special treats for the grown-ups too!
Playmobil advent calendar, £19.99, John Lewis / Star Wars Lego calendar, from £25, Amazon (try your local toy shop for a better deal, but be quick as they sell out very quickly) / Schleich farm calendar, £29.86, Amazon / Charm jewellery calendar, £15, Accessorize
Advent calendar shown in first image is by Emily Sutton – I bought it a few weeks ago in my local bookshop, but I sadly can’t find any online to share with you.
