Spring fashion is looking particularly elegant this year. Especially the dresses, with sweeping long lengths and proper sleeves. They owe a lot to the stylish silhouettes of the past, especially the 1930s and the 70s. It’s a cross between tea-on-the-lawn prettiness and dinner parties with Margo and Jerry.
At first glance, these dresses look impractical, but follow these three simple rules and you’ll find they’re anything but.
Don’t save them for best
You don’t need a special occasion like a wedding to wear a pretty dress. Ditch the so-called rules and wear you prettiest dress to eat cake, walk the dog or buy a pint of milk. If it puts a spring in your step, then do it! And don’t wait for warm warmer that may never come, wear them now with tights.
Keep everything else low-key
Don’t want to draw too much attention to yourself? Add your favourite laid-back touches, like a faded denim jacket and some simple gold jewellery. With these simple touches even the fanciest dress will feel so much more wearable and low-key.
Wear with flats
A pretty dress doesn’t automatically need a pretty shoe. Far from it. This season’s midi and maxi dresses look really at home with trainers, brogues or low heeled ankle boots. It’s super practical, and really extends how often you can wear your favourite dresses.

I totally agree Lizzie. I have been wearing dresses a lot more these past few years and have been trying to master the low key look. Getting there at last.
